The Brekije Mountain Pass hike connects remote villages and expansive views in the mountains of Kukës, northeastern Albania. Our route crossed the villages of Brekije, Tërshenë and Mustafaj on a clear weekend, combining a steady climb, a long descent and a memorable look at rural life beneath Mount Gjallica.

Brekije Mountain Pass hike near Kukës, Albania

Where Is Brekije Mountain Pass?

Brekije lies deep in the mountains of the Kukës region, within the wider landscape of Korab–Koritnik Nature Park. The protected area is known for alpine pastures, forests, cold-water springs and high mountain scenery. The official Albanian tourism page for Korab–Koritnik provides more background on the park and its natural features.

The village can be approached by four-wheel-drive vehicle or by the local minibuses often called furgona. Access and road conditions can vary, so local information is useful before setting out. Once on foot, the sense of isolation grows quickly as the route climbs away from the village.

Hiking From Brekije to Mustafaj

From Brekije village to the pass, our outing gained approximately 500 metres of elevation. The trail then continued on a much longer descent of roughly 1,250 metres toward Tërshenë and Mustafaj, two villages lying below the mountain slopes. These figures describe our route and may change depending on the exact starting point and finish.

The Brekije Mountain Pass section is approachable for hikers with a reasonable level of fitness, but the full crossing should not be underestimated. A long descent can be tiring, particularly on loose or wet ground. Steady footwear, enough water and an early start all help make the day more comfortable.

Mountain Views Around Kukës

The pass opens broad views across several distinctive landscapes of northeastern Albania. From higher ground, hikers can look toward the Sharr Mountains, Mount Gjallica and Koritnik. Farther below, the terrain falls toward a dramatic canyon and the blue water of Lake Fierza.

This combination of ridges, villages and water makes the Brekije Mountain Pass hike especially rewarding. The scenery changes throughout the day: open slopes give way to settlement paths, and distant peaks gradually become part of the view behind you.

Remote Villages and Local Hospitality

Brekije, Tërshenë and Mustafaj are more than points on a route. Walking between them offers a close view of the traditional mountain landscape and the communities that continue to live there. The journey feels different from a busy, purpose-built hiking destination because the paths remain connected to everyday village life.

After completing our hike, we travelled to Kukës for a traditional Albanian dinner. Sharing food at the end of the day was a fitting conclusion to the crossing and an important part of the experience. The outing was organised by Kosovo Mountain Club.

Planning a Brekije Mountain Pass Hike

Conditions in this area can change with the season. Hikers should check the weather, confirm transport and route details locally, and carry navigation suitable for remote terrain. The route should be adapted to the group’s fitness and experience, especially if rain, snow or poor visibility is expected.

Respect for residents, livestock and village property is also essential. Travelling with a local guide can make logistics easier while adding context about the landscape and communities along the way. Carry out all waste, keep noise low around homes and ask before photographing residents. These small choices help preserve the character that makes the crossing worthwhile.
