Why choose Wilderness Balkans?
- Direct 24/7 support from our own local mountain guides. You speak with people who know the trail, guesthouses, drivers and border routes personally – not a distant call centre.
- Support on the ground when needed. If a problem cannot be solved online, guides from our company who are active in the region can coordinate practical assistance on the route.
- More trail, less road. Strategic transfers remove less rewarding road sections and protect your time for the mountain experience.
- One local team for every complex detail. Accommodation, meals, drivers, 4×4 transfers, permits, GPX tracks and a physical Peaks of the Balkans map are organized together.
- Local relationships, not anonymous bookings. We work directly with mountain families, guesthouse hosts and drivers across the three countries.
Detailed self-guided itinerary
Distances and elevation figures are approximate. Guesthouse location, trail conditions and operational transfers can change the exact total. The final GPX files and departure pack take precedence.
The complete itinerary is shown below.
DAY 1Theth to Valbone over the pass
Route: Shkoder -> Theth -> Valbona Pass -> Valbone
Distance: approx. 16.4 km | Ascent/descent: +1,175 / -940 m | Walking: 7-8 hours
Overnight: Valbone
Leave Shkoder early on the arranged transfer to Theth and begin the trek beneath the limestone walls of the Accursed Mountains. The trail climbs through beech forest and open rocky ground to Valbona Pass, with broad views back over Theth and ahead into the long Valbone valley. Descend steadily to your guesthouse, where dinner and your overnight stay are waiting.
Good to know: Day 1 picnic lunch is not included. Bring food from Shkoder or buy it before starting the hike. Breakfast begins with the first included guesthouse overnight.
DAY 2Valbone to the high village of Cerem
Route: Valbone -> Persllopi Pass area -> Cerem
Distance: approx. 17 km | Ascent/descent: +1,200 / -950 m | Walking: 7-8 hours
Overnight: Cerem
Climb out of Valbone into quieter, less-travelled terrain and follow mountain paths toward the seasonal village of Cerem. The route moves through forest, high meadows and limestone scenery near the Montenegrin border. This is a substantial mountain day with rewarding views and a strong sense of remoteness. Finish at a family-run guesthouse for dinner and a simple mountain overnight.
Good to know: There are limited services between villages. Carry the picnic lunch supplied by your guesthouse, enough water and a charged phone with the GPX track downloaded offline.
DAY 3Cerem to the Doberdol summer pastures
Route: Cerem -> forest and alpine pastures -> Doberdol
Distance: approx. 16 km | Ascent/descent: +1,100 / -450 m | Walking: 6-7 hours
Overnight: Doberdol
A beautiful transition from forested slopes to the open high country of Doberdol. Follow shepherd paths, cross broad pastures and gain altitude gradually toward one of the trail's most memorable summer settlements. Wooden huts and grazing animals sit beneath rounded border ridges, creating a landscape that still feels connected to traditional mountain life.
Good to know: Doberdol is remote and accommodation is simple, with shared facilities and limited electricity. The warm welcome, homemade food and high-mountain setting are the reward.
DAY 4Gjeravica summit and descent to Gacafer
Route: Doberdol -> Gjeravica (2,656 m) -> Gacafer
Distance: approx. 18 km | Ascent/descent: +1,150 / -1,085 m | Walking: 8-9 hours
Overnight: Gacafer
Cross into Kosovo and climb through a chain of alpine basins and small glacial lakes toward Gjeravica, the highest mountain in Kosovo. From the 2,656-metre summit, layers of the Accursed Mountains spread across the borderlands. The long descent leads through open ridges and pastures to Gacaferi Guest House, where you can rest over a generous local dinner.
Good to know: This is one of the longest and most exposed days. Start early, carry adequate water and warm layers, and contact our guide team before committing to the summit if weather is unstable.
DAY 5Gacafer to Milishevc via Zavoj Pass
Route: Gacafer -> Zavoj Pass area -> Milishevc
Distance: approx. 19 km | Ascent/descent: +670 / -800 m | Walking: 6-7 hours
Overnight: Milishevc
Leave Gacafer on a direct line toward Milishevc, using a high pass through the western Kosovo mountains. Broad views, grazing country and quiet forest make this a rewarding alternative to the Three Borders stage. The route does not go via Trekufiri. Descend to the remote village of Milishevc and settle into a simple local guesthouse for the night.
Good to know: Services are sparse and mobile coverage can vary. Download the GPX offline, keep your phone in flight mode when not needed and carry the supplied picnic lunch and enough water.
DAY 6Milishevc to Babino Polje
Route: Milishevc -> high meadows and border paths -> Babino Polje
Distance: approx. 12.6 km | Ascent/descent: +733 / -882 m | Walking: 5-6 hours
Overnight: Babino Polje
Continue north through high meadows and forested border terrain, crossing from Kosovo into Montenegro. The stage is shorter than the previous day but still includes meaningful climbing and a long descent. In summer, the open slopes can be rich with wildflowers. Reach Babino Polje with time to relax before dinner at your guesthouse.
Good to know: Keep your border permit with you and follow the supplied crossing line. The trail can be faint in meadow sections, so check the GPX frequently rather than waiting for a junction.
DAY 7Taljanka and the Karanfili amphitheatre
Route: Babino Polje -> transfer to Grbaja -> Taljanka/Vallushnica -> Vusanje
Distance: approx. 12 km | Ascent/descent: +950 / -950 m | Walking: 6-7 hours
Overnight: Vusanje
A morning transfer brings you from Babino Polje to Grbaja Valley, beneath the sheer rock faces of the Karanfili massif. Hike the Taljanka and Vallushnica circuit for some of the finest ridge views on the entire journey: green valleys on one side, jagged limestone towers on the other. After the hike, the arranged transfer continues to Vusanje for dinner and overnight.
Good to know: The ridge is exposed to wind and cloud. In poor conditions, use the safer alternative provided in your route pack and speak with our local guide team before setting out.
DAY 8Jezerca Lakes and the Ropojana valley
Route: Vusanje -> Ropojana valley -> Jezerca Lakes -> Vusanje
Distance: approx. 16 km | Ascent/descent: +750 / -750 m | Walking: 6-7 hours
Overnight: Vusanje
Spend a second night in Vusanje and explore deeper into the Ropojana valley on a day hike toward the Jezerca glacial lakes. Limestone walls, seasonal watercourses and the remote lake basin create a very different atmosphere from the open ridges. Return along the valley to the same guesthouse, so you can hike with a lighter pack and enjoy a relaxed evening.
Good to know: Water levels and snow patches are seasonal. Our local team confirms the recommended route shortly before departure; the final GPX may be adjusted to match current trail conditions.
DAY 9Ropojana valley to Theth and Shkoder
Route: Vusanje -> 4×4 to Shtraza/Ropojana Lake -> Qafa e Pejes -> Theth -> Shkoder
Distance: approx. 17 km | Ascent/descent: +750 / -1,000 m | Walking: 7-8 hours
Overnight: Tour ends in Shkoder
After breakfast, take the included 40-minute off-road transfer to Shtraza/Ropojana Lake, cutting roughly six kilometres from this long day. Hike into Albania through the dramatic Ropojana valley and over Qafa e Pejes. Communist-era bunkers, Mount Arapi and the Kullat e Langojve cliffs frame the steady descent toward Theth. Your driver meets you at the first agreed cafe on the approach for the transfer to Shkoder, around two hours.
Good to know: Shtraza Lake normally holds water mainly in June and July. The exact pickup point and time are confirmed in your departure pack. Accommodation in Shkoder is not included.

Meet Adriatik
The Wilderness Balkans local team is led by Adriatik Gacaferi, a mountain guide from western Kosovo at the foot of the Accursed Mountains. With more than 12 years of guiding experience in the Balkans and on international expeditions, Adriatik has built his work around landscapes and communities he knows personally. On the Peaks of the Balkans, that means direct relationships with local hosts, drivers and guides – not a trip managed from a distant office.
